This updated advisory is a follow-up to the original advisory titled ICSA-21-194-13 Siemens SINAMICS PERFECT HARMONY GH180 that was published July 13, 2021, to the ICS webpage on us-cert.cisa.gov.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could result in arbitrary code execution and unauthorized access to sensitive data.

4.2 VULNERABILITY OVERVIEW

4.2.1    IMPROPER RESTRICTION OF OPERATIONS WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF A MEMORY BUFFER CWE-119
A remote unauthenticated attacker with network access could potentially write arbitrary data and code to protected memory areas or read sensitive data to launch further attacks.
CVE-2020-15782 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 8.1 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).

Siemens has identified the following specific mitigations and workarounds users can apply to reduce the risk:

As a general security measure, Siemens strongly recommends users protect network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms. In order to operate the devices in a protected IT environment, Siemens recommends users configure the environment according to Siemens operational guidelines for industrial security, and follow the recommendations in the product manual.
